FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (19-21, 4-13 SSC) was able to take two from the Lynn Fighting Knights (18-22, 4-10 SSC), winning game one 5-2, before handling Lynn in game two, 9-3.
NSU was able to get revenge on the Fighting Knights, who swept the Sharks in a doubleheader earlier in the season in a non-conference matchup.
Game One
Erika Garcia (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) (3-3) had another great pitching performance, allowing only two runs on four hits and struck out two batters.
After a scoreless first inning, the Sharks got it going in the second, starting with a
Shelby Talon (Fr., Boynton Beach, Fla.) one-out single through the right side, scoring both Garcia and
Laura Saladrigas (Sr., Hollywood, Fla.) from second and third, respectively. Later in the inning,
Lorena Spaulding (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) ripped a single into shallow right field, allowing Talon to score from second, after the leftfielder had problems fielding the ball.
The Sharks tacked on another two runs in the fifth, beginning with a bases-loaded wild pitch that allowed Garcia to score from third, extending the lead to 4-0. Later in the inning,
Samira Tanaka (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) dropped a ball into shallow right, scoring
Elizabeth Spring (Fr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) from third, giving NSU its final run of the game.
Lynn had a little rally going in the seventh, bringing in two runs. However, Garcia was able to retire the final two batters of the game to get her third win in a row.
The Sharks outhit Lynn 8-4.
Game Two
Lynn got off to a stronger start in game two, when in the first inning Kasey Murray doubled into right field, bringing in a runner and giving the Fighting Knights its first lead of the afternoon.
Lynn’s lead lasted until the third inning, when the Sharks had a breakout four-run frame, sparked by a throwing error from the second baseman on a routine grounder from Tanaka. The errant throw to first allowed
Melanie Spicola (So., Umatilla, Fla.) to reach home from second. Saladrigas, the next batter in the lineup, crushed a two-run double into left, scoring both Tanaka and Spaulding. NSU’s final run of the inning came on a Garcia double into right, allowing Saladrigas to score easily from second, giving the Sharks a comfortable 4-1, lead.
NSU was able to continue its hot batting, scoring another three runs in the fifth. A Spaulding groundout to second gave the Sharks its fifth run of the game, scoring
Marissa Raimo (Sr., Hampton Bays, N.Y.) from third. During the next at-bat, Tanaka had a big two-run double to left center to widen the gap to 7-1.
Lynn was able to cut in NSU’s lead in the sixth, scoring two runs, however the Sharks erased that by putting up another big two-run inning, cruising to a comfortable 9-3 win.
With the sweep, the Sharks now have their longest win streak of the season, six, going into Sunday’s series finale against the Fighting Knights.
Tomorrow’s game, which was originally scheduled for Friday, will begin at 1 p.m. at the AD Griffin Sports Complex.
